Lo Nigro

Our Lo Nigro family was originally located in Palermo, Sicily before moving to Piana degli Albanesi (then Piana dei Greci) in the mid 1700s. This family's surname literally translates to english as "the black", and is speculated to be a nickname given to a person from Northern Africa. However, it is equally likely given the history of Palermo and Sicily in general that it was originally the name of an Arab or Jewish immigrant. The following information is taken from my Family Tree Maker file, be aware that it is no where near being complete, especially on the more contemporary end.

Immigration - New York Passenger List - Ship Name: CANADA - 29 March 1912
Lo Nigro, Nicolomale 22yrs shoemaker Destination: New Orleans, LA Hometown: Piana dei Greci Father: Vincent Lo Nigro
*this record is important, quite possibly our Nick Lo Nigro's immigration record. I just got off the phone about 8:30 today January 5th, 2009 with Aunt Margaret Lo Nigro, whom still resides in Natchez MS. She mentioned that the Clesceri and Lo Nigro families were friends, thus the arranged marriage between Nick and Margaret Clesceri. She also mentioned that the family may have been from a small town "Piano" . This record lists Nick Lo Nigro of a town Piana, very close to what Margaret suspected. This town iscalled Piana degli Albanesi today, which is just SW of Palermo. The inhabitants have their origin in the Albanian town of Himarë and the Greek town of Hirone. Record lists a father of Nicolo as Vincent Lo Nigro and lists him as a shoemaker, which was Vincent's ( his son's) profession.
"now, the other one, was my father standing in front of his shoe repair shop in August, 1942....(holding his cigarette, hmmmm) lol. He passed away four months after that, on Dec. 18, 1942...
Back then they said he had an "Ulcerated stomach"....over the years, after cancer became more known about, Mama always said she felt like it was stomach cancer....don't know that for sure...of course." - Aunt Margaret Lo Nigro Jan 09 2009
Those numbers are a gold mine, the date 3/6/41 is the date your Nicolo got his citizenship and the numbers should be the file number of his papers, looks like 13-7134 but your'e right it could be 18-7134. There should be a second page to the manifest, you have the first page that tells who he left behind in Piana (His father vincenzo LoNigro) the second page would tell you who he was going to join when he got to his destination, his final destination was new Orleans. How did you find Nicolo I couldn't find him at all. - Joni Saunders (regarding immigration record)
Immigrated with $10 dollars, had never been to the US before, had a dark complexion, and chesnut colored eyes and hair.
